In May of 2004, Waypoints Faith Community in Greeley Colorado, started serving one meal a week free and open to the public. Within six months Waypoints added an additional meal per week. For almost eight years Waypoints served two meals a week on Tuesday and Fridays. In addition to the weekly meals in 2004 Waypoints also started providing an annual Thanksgiving meal for those who had no place to go. Within the first year Waypoints was averaging 10,000+ meals served per year.
In the summer of 2012, Waypoints Faith Community, was forced to relocate and the meals had to stop. In the fall of 2012 Waypoints was able to move into their new building, but didn't have enough funds to complete the kitchen. Finally after lots of hard work and fundraising a new kitchen was completed and opened in October of 2014. Immediately we began two meals a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, plus lunch one Saturday a month, and our annual Thanksgiving meal.
News of our meals spread quickly thorugh the downtown Greeley area and our meals served increased to over 330+ per week. Thankfully so did community support. Thanks to area supporters like the Weld County Food Bank, The Harvest Program, Starbucks, and Chipotle. We also received local support from area churches like St. Patrick's Presbyterian, LaSalle Presbyterian, Luthern Family Services, Church Project, and individual sponsors.
In the summer of 2016, Waypoints Faith Community, formed a separate board to lead the kitchen. The Galley was formed are applied for their own 501 (C) (3) status becoming their own agency. The Galley board is actively pursuing new ways to expand and grow the Galley and the services it offers.
